ugh

well we got beat by 20 points today. It was a sorry game. I really didn't care about that. The worst part was slightly spraining my ankle. It hurts to push inward with my left foot now. I'm hoping it will go away but it sure made left turns hard. I could really feel the pain on those sharp turns. It didn't affect my run when running straight though. Tomorrow is my long run. I'm going for an afternoon one, but I'm not too sure where. I may try out the greenway in town, but at the same time I really don't feel like running by cars (it seemed from the map that the course wasn't all paved) I could go back out to the track, but I remember the last one and I'm not to fond of repeating that.

Hey Ron,
I just read some of your post here and thought I would comment. As a newbie runner myself, the one post about you comparing the 10ks and half were interesting. My question would be were they consistent/experience runners? or new runners? I have found on the RW threads that sometimes the 10k times and half times/or full times does not correlate. I think it all depends on training and rather some people are better at shorter vs long distance and the ones who train for all types might have better indication or correlation, just a thought. I'm sure you have probably already heard that before.

I know for me, my 10ks were not really trained or taken seriously, especially the hilly one I did last year. For that one I just signed up b/c someone told me it would be good for me to do shorter races. And the recent one that I ran in Nov. was a tune up race and I wasn't feeling all that great that day.

I also think it depends on how important a certain race is to you, I honestly wasn't totally serious about a race (don't get me wrong, I still gave the best I could for that race) until I trained for Chicago, meaning that the previous races, I did not put forth the training the best I could. I also have a 10k coming up about the same time as you next month and I am going to put more training for it, taking it more serious and see where I am at. I know my fitness level is there since I just completed a marathon but it will be interesting to see how I fare out. I also was going to maybe try another half in March like you but decided I better focus more on 10ks right now and maybe try 5ks (which I hate ;) ) but from what I've read, during base mile training these smaller races will help me to get ready for my full and keep me focused. I will incorporate a half down the road, closer to the full like I did for my last training. It definitely helped to see where my level was.

As for injuries that will always be the toughest challenge to avoid while training, you just have to listen to your body. I have been fortunate so far, only some nagging issues and if that happens I will scale down or give it a rest. Thanks for posting earlier and I will try to keep mine up.

Non running related, but I was curious as to what you do in your art website? See, this is what I'm talking about when you read other people's blogs! Takes a lot of time! :)

I know! I spend half of my time just reading nowadays.

I know it's hard and probably not very accurate to compare races, but it was more of just a small observation that seemed to keep popping up. I have actually been putting down some data, and will post some interesting findings when I can. But that too takes some time to put together in a fashion people can understand.

As for smaller races, I love them. The Susan Komen 5k is what jump-started me back into running consistently again. I haven't missed more than 2 days in a row since that race ;)

As for running a half closer to your marathon at first I thought it might not be a good idea, but I guess it all depends on timing. The half would be a great indicator for you especially for setting up a goal pace.

the art website is www.wiremanarts.com and originally I was going to do a lot more with it, but then got another teaching job. I basically just have it up for looks now and haven't really had a chance to do much art lately. I drew 8 portraits for christmas and have been working on wedding caricatures for my sister's save the date cards. I also sketch when I'm not blogging, reading, running, or teaching, which isn't often enough (and now I can add coaching to the list). April is taking web design at a local college this semester so I am kind of holding off to see what cool things I can learn from her before updating the site further.

thanks for your comment.
